| The German Russians by James Griess The book, The German Russians, is the epic story about the lives of German Russians who endured countless hardships while carving out a future in both Russia and the US. These German peasants migrated to Russia in the late 18th and early 19th century. Failing to find the freedoms which they sought, 900,000 migrated from Russia to North and South America by 1914. The book deals with the motives behind these migrations. Also discussed are the Burlington Railroad, its colonizing activities in Nebraska in the years following the Civil War, and the German Russian settlements in Sutton and other Nebraska communities. The 1873 settlement in the Yankton area is also included. Many German Russians settled in the Dakotas and in the North & South Platte Valley where they were employed in the sugar beet industry. These pioneers are among the best examples of the people who built America. The 335 pages are richly illustrated, some in color. What others are saying about the book: "Your book just arrived and I am thrilled with it! I only wish I could take a few days off of work and sit and read it from cover to cover. I am just so impressed with it-the covers, the photos, and the content." - Luella Hodson, Osmond, Nebraska. "The book looks absolutely great, the photos are crisp and nice, the information presented so cleanly. You just did a wonderful job on it." - Linda Hein, Nebraska State Historical Society. "Congratulations! I just finished reading your book and found it most informative and interesting. I came away with increased knowledge of European & German history in the 18th & 19th century and greater appreciation for the difficult life for our ancestors in Russia and those who settled in Nebraska and the Dakotas." - Tom Youngworth "German Russian[s] of either Volga or Black Sea heritage [will] encounter a gold mine of information. The book will answer a host of Frequently Asked Questions. Why did the Germans go to Russia in the first place, then immigrate to the Americas a century or so later? What is the difference between the Volga and Black Sea Germans? What was the nature of their religious life? What kind of cultural and economic life did they have in Russia? What were their lives like once they settled in Nebraska? Why did they do well wherever they went?" - Edna Boardman, German Russian Heritage Collection, Fargo.
